Compatibility - My Experience with GTA on Vista x64


I will just make notes here as I play through these games on Vista 64bit any problems I run into and if I was able to correct them.

Grand Theft Auto - I was eventually able to run this through DOSBox by copying everything on the CD to a folder and mounting it through DOSBox and running GTA.bat. Then I found a DOS crack (now included in the torrent) and it worked but it didn't run very well. The sound skipped a lot and so did the video. The windows version seemed to work flawlessly on Windows XP32 though. Thrashing mentioned in his torrent that the Windows executable should work fine with his image. Grand Theft Auto - London - Seems to be the same deal with this one where you have to find a crack for the DOS version. I then received an error about not being able to find audio drivers. This also works fine in XP. Grand Theft Auto 2 - This was up and running very easily, just install, run the patch included on the CD and copy the crack for the patch from the CD. Grand Theft Auto III - I'm not sure if this is a vista issue or a 64bit OS issue but I had to run GTA 3 in compatibility mode for Windows 98 to correct a bug that kept the brake on while I tried to go in reverse (they are the same button, end result I could not go in reverse) and slow loading issues. If you experience any problems, this might be worth a try. You can also grab the 1.1 patch if you want and I did not need a crack for it. Grand Theft Auto - Vice City - This one is built on the same engine as GTA3 so running it with Windows 98 compatibility seems to work okay. It does seem to have the brake+reverse issue but it isn't too bad and some things load very slowly but it works! It also might help to turn on the frame limiter if you are having issues. Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas - This one seems to work perfectly. I am going to mess around with some mods once I'm done playing it so I didn't try the patch but the crack on the dvd works fine so far. Anyways, I'm done with edits now (til GTA 4 comes out *crosses fingers*). Enjoy! Grand Theft Auto 4 - No problems except I need an upgrade.
